TclPianist for Mac

New version 1.3!

TclPianist is a replacement GUI and MIDI player for PG Music's software called "The Pianist". This was an excellent listening and learning tool for playing several hundred classical piano MIDI files. The PG Music software is now abandoned and discontinued, and quite hard to find. TclPianist does not contain any MIDI files whatsoever, so you will need to have the original MIDI files at least from "The Pianist". The original software came in 5 volumes, numbered 1 - 5. TclPianist recognizes and plays all 5 volumes, comprising almost 900 MIDI files. The motivations for TclPianist were:

The current software runs both on OS X and on MacOS 8/9. TclPianist 1.2 has been tested on 8.6 and 9.2.2, as well as 10.2.x and 10.3.x. TclPianist 1.3 runs on 8.6/9.2.2 or 10.3.x only, not on 10.2.x. Neither will run on 10.1, however TclPianist 1.3 should work on 10.4 too. Both TclPianist 1.2 and 1.3 are available below. The UI itself will run unchanged on almost anything, including Linux and Windows, but the MIDI parts currently run only on OS X and OS 8/9. The OS 8/9 version requires the excellent SoundApp by Norman Franke to play the MIDI files, and if you want to play to external MIDI devices (recommended), you'll need OMS. Both of these are available below. The OS X version uses Quicktime only to play the MIDI files, and is self-contained, no other software is needed, however it is highly recommended that you obtain a Soundfont2 piano file for OS X (greatly increases the sound quality over the builtin Quicktime acoustic piano sound, see Readme).

TclPianist 1.3 adds the following features:

TclPianist is free, and may be freely distributed in its original form. However I retain the copyright to it and it may not be modified or sold.
